Down the line when they begin to see results in this area of their body they will notice that their legs look far too skinny and this throws off the look of everything else. So knowing how to build leg muscle is important. What you need to do in order to get started is start inducing an adaptive response. What is an adaptive response you might ask?
An adaptive response is when your muscles are put under so much strain that they have to respond by adapting. This means getting bigger and stronger. If your leg muscles are not being induced to adapt, then you are not going to grow any muscle in them. What you want to do is start doing exercises that are going to activate and fatigue the biggest parts of what are called your motor units inside of your legs. Because these muscles are so big, it is going to take a lot in order to activate them properly.
What you want is to have a high level of volume as well as time under tension in order to activate all the biggest muscles inside of your legs. You can do this by focusing on some of the exercises outlined below.
Performing leg lifts
Leg lifts can be a great way for you to build leg muscle. What you want to do is lay flat on the floor with both of your legs lifted in front of you. Make sure they are straight together when you do this. Now simple lift them up and down for a nice amount of reps. The key here is to do this in volume and then as you get stronger, find ways to amp up the intensity level.
Perform scissor kicks
Scissor kicks are one of the best exercises to do in order to build leg muscle. What you want to do is lay flat on your back, lift both of your legs no more than a few inches off of the floor, and then perform alternating kicking motions with them. You can variate the speed if you want or add some ankle weight in order to amp up the intensity.
Perform squats to build leg muscle
In order to do squats you can either use a squat machine or you can decide to make use of free weights instead. If you tried to use only your body weight this would not help you all that much to build leg muscle. Free weight are probably the best way to go, primarily using a barbell. If you use a barbell you want it to rest across the back of your shoulders. Now stand with your feet spread apart in order to focus on the inner thighs. You can put your feet closer in order to focus on the outside of the thighs. Now lower your thighs until they are at a right angle with the floor. Now in a slow fashion begin lifting yourself up. Make sure you keep your back straight as you are doing this.
Knowing how to build leg muscle is only the first step. You will have to be very disciplined in order to get your legs nice and thick the way you might want them. Do not get discouraged. Just be prepared to work really hard and put your legs through a lot of rigorous exercises in order to build them up big and solid.
